Last week I interviewed Li Samuet, lead vocalist of Bomba Estereo, and we got to talking about the band’s song “To’ My Love,” from their new album Amanecer. First she schooled me on the fact that the song title meant “To'” as in “Todo My Love,” since I’d pronounced it “To.” Then she explained that the song was about two people who’d met by chance and brought new meaning to the phrase “quick study.” But what most fascinated me was her grasp of the use of Spanglish and how it was defining a different hemispheric notion of identity in which national identity was accommodating difference, and how increased movement and information exchange between countries was creating change.
